The Andrew James Food Mixer 5.2L is one of the cheapest on the market, but is it worth buying?
Here's what a busy cake maker told me about her mixer
At under £90.00 the Andrew James 5.2L Food Mixer is a great value food mixer.
It has been recommended by Janine who is one of the hardest working cake makers I know. She won't let me call her a professional (although I think she is), however, she does make fantastic looking celebration cakes, as well as amazing cake toppers.
How long have you owned your machine? Over a year and a half
How often do you use it? 5 days a week
Have you been happy with the performance of the machine? So far yes, but I am now looking to upgrade as I need a bigger machine, and am looking at the Andrew James 7L.
Have you had any problems with the machine? The flexi beater attachment split. I rang up Andrew James as it was still in it's 12 month warranty period, and they sent me a new one straight away. They didn't even want to see a photograph to prove that it was damaged.

Wattage of the Machine and Performance
Bear in mind that a high wattage machine doesn't necessarily mean better performance. Although the wattage plays a role, you also have to take into account how the motor is driven. Andrew James food mixers (both the 5.2L and 7L) are belt driven. Put simply, this means that when you turn on the electric, the power drives a belt, which then turns the motor. Some other food mixers (such as the Kitchenaid stand mixer) have direct drive motors, which means that the power drives the motor directly, without having to go through a belt. So although some food mixers have a lower wattage, they may be more efficient as the power goes directly to the motor, instead of having to go through a belt first.
The Red Andrew James 5.2L food mixer is an Amazon bestseller. Please bear in mind though that this will have a lot to do with the affordability of the machine. Plus the fact that red is a very popular kitchen appliance colour. Having said that, all the Andrew James Food Mixers 5.2L have had very positive reviews, with the majority being 4 and 5 stars. About Andrew James
Andrew James specialise in affordable Kitchen Gadgets and their food mixers are within most people's budget. They've had great reviews, and most people seem happy with their mixers. But don't expect the same kind of quality and durability that you get with the more expensive brands. I am not saying this to knock the company, but rather to give you an idea of what to expect. This machine isn't going to you years and years, and if it breaks, it could be more cost effective to buy a new one than to get it repaired. But then it is a very affordable, and according to Janine a very good mixer for the money.
12 Month Warranty
All Andrew James food mixers come with a 12 month warranty, and if there are any problems within that time, the company will either repair or replace the machine, and will pay for the machine to be collected and returned to you.
If any of the attachments break within 12 months, they will send you a replacement straight away. I contacted Andrew James to see if attachments were available to buy separately and they confirmed that they were, so if you did have a problem out of warranty, the attachments are easy enough to get hold of.
If anything goes wrong with the actual machine once it's out of warranty, then it's the buyers responsibility to pay to send it back (although this is standard with most company's). They'll give you a quote before they repair it, and I’m told that their repair costs are reasonable.
Having owned the Andrew James Fully Automatic Ice Cream Maker, I can say that I have found the company really good to deal with. They are a small company based in Durham, and are very easy to contact by phone. When I received my ice cream maker, there was a slight chip in the lid, so I rang the company, and was sent a replacement straight away.
You do get what you pay for, and this is especially true with food mixers. Less than £100.00 for a food mixer is very good value, but remember, you may need to replace it a lot sooner than you would another make and model, especially if you use it a lot. However, I think the fact that Janine uses hers 5 days a week, and has owned it for a year and a half is testament to the fact that it can stand up to a thrashing, especially given how much she works it!
If your looking for an entry level food mixer to get you started, and your not expecting it to last for years and years, then the Andrew James Food Mixer 5.2L is a very good value machine. Just don't expect to be leaving it in your will!
Available in 3 colours - Red, Black and Silver
It's also available with a Meat Grinder and Blender Attachment
